What about Wireless?

Wireless broadband is often proposed as the solution for outlying properties, unable to get a decent ADSL or FTTC VDSL connection. Unfortunately for many in and around Ewhurst, not only are the phone lines long and “noisy”, but we are also surrounded by trees and hills, which can prevent reliable “line of sight” transmissions from radio masts etc. Kijoma are listed as the only Wireless broadband service provider for Cranleigh by SamKnows. We are aware of┬áthree established Kijoma connections in Ewhurst and several more in the surrounding area, but currently this small company has no plans to install any new services in Ewhurst. Walter is actively researching and trialling alternative wireless solutions, so please contact us if you are considering these products.

Bill Lewis of Kijoma contacted us last week, and confirmed that the company has no intention of providing any new connections in Ewhurst. He wished to point out that they did install some services in Ewhurst a few years ago, and I have, therefore, updated the FAQ entry to reflect this.

For anyone considering Kijoma, I suggest reading this forum thread first so you know what to expect (scroll down for the recent posts.)

4G may offer hope, but only if coverage here is better than 3G.

Andrew reports that he has used 3G as a backup service in Horsham Lane when his main connection is down. James reports achieving up to 5 Mbps using 3G on Pitch Hill.

I have also tested a new WiBE external device and obtained around 7 Mbps in an optimum position using HSPA+ but with quite atrocious Ping times. Even then you need very deep pockets !
