The following is shown on the TalkTalk web site, although BT and other Communication Providers don’t seem to be announcing the difficulties yet.

Total Loss of Service

This customers exchange is currently experiencing an outage. Voice and Data are affected. Our Engineers are aware of the issue and are currently investigating.
LATEST UPDATE: Openreach engineers have confirmed identification of a cable break to be the cause of this incident. Their engineers are currently continuing their investigations and repairs to restore service to the affected subscribers. Openreach are currently unable to supply an ECD but we will continue to communicate all updates accordingly, once received.
Re the undefined cable fault mentioned above, please note that if you have a VDSL broadband service from one of the local cabinets it’s possible that your broadband service will continue even if you have no dial tone.

LATEST UPDATE: BT Openreach engineers have confirmed identification of a fibre break in the vicinity of Cranleigh exchange. Their engineers are currently onsite continuing their investigations and repairs to restore service to the affected subscribers. Openreach have supply an ERT of 03/01 but we will continue to communicate all updates accordingly, once received.
This is the first time we have observed an individual fibre break causing outages, but it would be a great deal more helpful if BT specified which PCPs are affected now and others possibly whilst the repairs are undertaken.
Note that Ewhurst still has working VDSL services so our three local fibres must still be intact at present and could well be in a different fibre cable.
A New Year gift from Openreach? Following the repeated power cuts due to the storms, and a loss of connection for a few hours, my IP Profile dropped slightly from 6.8 to 6.6 Mbps on Monday. But today it has jumped up to 7.5, the first time it has exceeded 7 Mbps. As far as I know, no work has been done which could affect our 2 km cable from cabinet 18. The cause of this, and previous unexpected improvements, remains a mystery. Openreach always claimed they would be able to improve FTTC reach and performance, but have not admitted to making any changes so far. Plusnet, my ISP, also deny having changed anything which could account for the previous uplift. Of course, this latest increase is quite likely to be temporary, so I’ll monitor it for a while before checking that the Plusnet profile matches.
